Is the war over yet?
This is the question Ukrainians hear too often. In response to this, members of UNYF Edmonton have initiated and produced this project and exhibition in 2023.
Nearly three years have passed since russia’s brutal full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. Throughout, russia has relentlessly terrorized Ukraine, committing every war crime imaginable, violating Geneva Conventions, and decimating dozens of peaceful Ukrainian cities. Daily bombings target homes, hospitals, schools, and churches. Civilians, including children, face kidnapping, torture, murder, and forced deportations, while Ukrainian defenders endure horrific torture and executions. So, no, the was is not over. And the war will not be over until the invaders are stopped.
Thus, this exhibition was created to highlight the magnitude of the humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine, the extent of horrors inflicted by russia, and the stories of courageous Ukrainians whose lives were ruthlessly taken away — or forever altered — by this war. Recently, the exhibition has been expanded with a second part, created in response to russia’s ongoing daily war crimes against Ukraine.
This exhibition consists of 37 information posters and 5 banners, which contain photos of well-known Ukrainian photographers and verified stories and statistics about the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Although this exhibition is just a glimpse, it is an attempt to raise awareness about the war in Ukraine. We cannot and will not let the world forget or remain silent about it, we must continue to raise awareness about russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as such we at the UNYF Edmonton are trying to do everything in our power to do so, and we encourage you to do the same.
Steps you can take to help our cause:
Remember – you don’t have to be Ukrainian to support Ukraine. And if Russia stops fighting, the war will end; but if Ukraine stops fighting, there will be no more Ukraine.
On November 25th, 2024, UCC Edmonton organized its annual Holodomor commemoration event to honour the memory of the victims of the Holodomor genocide and stand together in unity and remembrance. UNYF Edmonton decided to take advantage of this opportunity and combine the event with the display of the “The War Is NOT Over” exhibition. This helped to convey information about the war in Ukraine to a broader audience. The event was attended by over 200 people, among whom were Canadian government representatives such as Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk (Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta), Heather McPherson (Member of the House of Commons of Canada), Garnett Genuis (Member of Parliament for Sherwood Park), and Amarjeet Sohi (Mayor of the City of Edmonton).
On November 16th, 2024, UNYF Edmonton organized the premiere of the documentary “Новоприбулі | Newcomers”, created by a Canadian director, at the UNF Hall. The film’s promotion targeted a non-Ukrainian audience to spark international interest and draw attention to Ukraine’s ongoing war. Therefore, UNYF Edmonton decided to take advantage of this opportunity and combine the event with the display of the “The War Is NOT Over” exhibition. This helped to convey information about the war in Ukraine to a broader international audience. The event was attended by 220 people, 95% of whom were Canadians.
The “War Is Not Over” exhibition was first displayed in Edmonton City Hall on November 25, 2023.
The “War Is Not Over” exhibition started to make its way out of its originating city to continue spreading awareness about russia’s invasion of Ukraine. First stop – Ukrainian National Hall in Smoky Lake. Huge thank you to the Ukrainian community of Smoky Lake who helped organize the exhibition.
The “War Is Not Over” exhibition was displayed in the Ukrainian Youth Unity Complex on February 18, 2024, where the screening of the “Generation Maidan – A Year of Revolution and War” film was also organized by the League of Ukrainian Canadians (Edmonton). Attendees were able to view the exhibition before and after the film.
February 24, 2024, marked 2 years of full-scale horrors that have been taking place in Ukraine. At least 10,000 civilians, including more than 560 children, have been killed and over 18,500 have been injured since Russia launched its full-scale armed attack against Ukraine in February, according to the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.
The “War Is Not Over” exhibition has made its way to Ontario, where it was displayed at Toronto City Hall from February 20th to February 24th, 2024, dedicated to the heartbreaking anniversary.
The “War Is Not Over” exhibition has made its way to Manitoba! On February 25, 2024, it was displayed in the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg. The showing was dedicated to one of the volunteer’s friends, who is still in Russian captivity – Gennady Kharchenko. The museum Canadian Museum for Human Rights was at its maximum capacity that day!
